Usui Reiki Ryo-ho was founded in 1922(the eleventh year of the Taisho period). Since then, it has been gradually spreading out all over the world as an excellent healing technique originally from Japan and it is said that more than 5 million of people are practicing it now. Accordingly, the number of people visiting Japan to cherish the memory of Mikao Usui Sensei, the founder of Usui Reiki Ryo-ho, is increasing.
Formerly, “Mt. Kurama in Kyoto: the place where Mikao Usui Sensei trained himself” and “Saiho-ji temple in Tokyo : the final resting place of Usui Sensei” were two well-known memorial places for him. However recently, another memorial place, “Taniai in Gifu prefecture: the birthplace of Mikao Usui Sensei” has been included and those three came to be called “Three major holy place of Reiki”.
As Taniai in Yamagata City, Gifu Prefecture is located in the mountain area and there isn’t a good transportation system, just a limited number of people may visit there. However, the area is filled with Reiki of nature and worthy to be called “the native place of Reiki”. Therefore, the number of Reiki practitioners from Japan and abroad, visiting Taniai is increasing gradually.
There is an old shrine called Amataka Shrine in Taniai and the three Usui brothers including Mikao Usi Sensei, donated a stone Otorii (a large gateway) to this shrine. We can find the name, “Mikao Usui”, engraved on it. Mikao Usui Sensei had left his hometown when he was young and didn’t return back there. This tells us that he might have a deep sentiment for Taniai, where he was born and grew up, considering that he donated the Otorii after the establishment of Usui Reiki Ryo-ho.
When I visited Amataka Shrine for the first time in 2000, I came up with an idea of building a monument of “Mikao Usui Sensei’s Birthplace” within the precincts of the shrine, where we can find his name engraved on the gateway that proves that he was truly existed there. The idea has been just a vague dream in my heart for about 17 years. However, I could have a chance to meet the chief priest and the parishioner representative of Amataka Shrine and some members of the Usui family last year. They were so kind to offer a cooperation for building the monument. Now, we would like to ask the cooperation of Reiki practitioners. We hope many Reiki practitioner will participate in this memorial project. Let’s do it together.
We have already finished selecting a stone dealer and asked them to search for a natural stone suitable for the site. We estimate the budget for this project will be about 5 million yen including the donation for the Amataka Shrine. We would like to cover those expenses by the donations from those who are willing to support the project.
The name of the monument will be “The birthplace of Mikao Usui Sensei, the founder of Usui Reiki Ryo-ho” with the builders’ name “All those willing from Gendai Reiki-ho practitioners”. Then, we have set up The Executive Committee of Stone Monument Project, which is in charge of the practical works from donations to unveiling and the commemorative ceremony.
Please keep in mind that the donation should be voluntary and not be compulsory.
And we will not give up building the monument even if the donations do
not reach the target amount. Please refer to the detailed plan attached.
We appreciate your understanding and support for the project.
